Daily Paper FW23 "Words That Guide Us"
As in every season, storytelling is used to reconnect with history, for FW23. I researched and created a concept based on the origins and history of oral culture. Words are the key to building relationships and connecting with the past, the present and the future. Continue bringing knowledge, memories and history to the community through art forms like spoken word, poetry and rap where one plays with words to produce sounds that carry the intended message and bring people together. It is those words that guide us and facilitate the transmission process of both tangible and intangible knowledge through time and space, and from generation to generation.
Daily Paper SS23 "Under The Same Moon"
It started with the Concept of Love.. and we called it 'Under The Same Moon', a love letter to language and conversation, the teachings of nature and its network, and an elevation of self through generational knowledge. Taking inspiration from the rich cultural history of Northern Africa — and the artisanal connection between the land and spoken language — the collection is a mix of woven tapestries, jacquard suits, and natural henna dyes which are used to reflect the tradition of North African craftsmanship and the use of natural materials. The story also leans into the power of nature; an illustration of a plant network can be spotted in various summer styles, all designed in an assemblage of earthy tones.
Daily Paper Fall/Winter ’22 ‘Identities Rebuilt’
The collection concept explores the Journey of the African Diaspora and its progression through a process of healing trauma, rebuilding identity, and grounding it in the here and the now. We drew inspiration from historically significant people, stories, and artefacts to celebrate this journey. By carefully translating them into a range of contemporary items, we brought to life a collection that is to be worn by those who will define the future of our culture and community.
Fall/Winter 21 ‘Ancestral Anarchy’
Inspired by ancient societies, togetherness and community, we explore the social philosophy of African Anarchism. Echoing an empowered Pan-African experience, through kindred setups, mirroring effects and natural elements. Aiming to define community in the broader sense, mirrors pose as an extension meant to show multiple societal layers. With a retrospective into the past, Ancestral Anarchy draws on communal values that prevailed across the African continent during pre-colonial times. Centred around principles of sharing, giving and mutual respect, the collection’s guiding concepts find relevance in current times.
Daily Paper FW20
"Memoirs of a Parallel Universe" is the title of the comic book that narrates the story of the collection, The comic follows the adventures of four superpowered characters, HoH, Nana, Yannayi, and Massassi, in a dystopian world, where the problems of today's culture are taken to the extreme. The events of the four protagonists, each characterized by their own personal aesthetic, are reflected directly in the proposal of the brand's FW20 collection. Meanwhile, amid this multi-layering of meanings, Daily Paper uses comic storytelling to ask questions about cultural assimilation, the generational trauma of ethnic minorities, and the ideals and life expectations that inspire modern life. Daily Paper SS20
For the SS20 season, the Daily Paper collection builds upon the theme of Afrofuturism first introduced in FW19, imagining how a future society severed from Earth uses cultural heritage and nostalgia to build the foundations of a new world. The collection explores the evolution of the collective consciousness of this civilization, and the stages experienced as they come to terms with their identities as members of a completely novel social group, as not just international nomads but interplanetary ones.
As the formation of the new world enters its final stages, futuristic innovations like artificial intelligence and algorithmic learning become the key drivers of society. With these advanced technologies, augmented reality reaches such a level where the physical world is no longer distinct from the virtual. Read more
Daily Paper FW19
Envisioning new futures, the Daily Paper FW19 collection draws inspiration from the aesthetics of Afrofuturism - taking elements which were once considered new and modern, but are now seen as an indicator of the past. Drawing upon its nostalgia, the collection celebrates a rich, shared history, whilst looking to the future; a celebration of our diverse and ever-evolving identities.Through the lens of Afrofuturism, we celebrate the unknown. A quest to understand and celebrate our heritage, whilst pursuing innovation. Investigating and eliminating the notion of borders, this is a collection that deftly blends the past, the future, technology, and liberation. It is here that our African heritage is fused with innovation.
